Now that winter is leaving and it’s finally getting warmer around Allentown, Pennsylvania, it’s time to get out and enjoy all of your favorite outdoor activities again. When you’re ready to take in the beautiful weather, make sure you plan to spend some time at one of these top Allentown parks.
Lehigh Parkway
One excellent place to get outside and enjoy the warm weather is Lehigh Parkway. This large public park follows the Little Lehigh Creek for 3 miles and offers a variety of outdoor activities to enjoy. Take a hike on the 6 miles of trails available in the park, or enjoy a game at the disc golf course. The creek is an excellent place to try your hand at some fishing, and the park is home to the Little Lehigh Fish Hatchery. If you’re interested in learning something new, you can stop by the Museum of Indian Culture in the park.
Trexler Memorial Park
Perhaps one of the most popular parks in the area is Trexler Memorial Park. This scenic park features plenty of open, grassy lawns and large, mature trees that make lovely spots for a picnic. You can also head out on one of the biking paths or take a stroll along a LifeTrail Club walking path. If you simply want to relax, take a seat on one of the benches that surround the park’s pond and enjoy some time watching the ducks and other birds swim around.
Covered Bridge Park
As the name suggests, the quaint Covered Bridge Park preserves two historic covered bridges along Jordan Creek. However, that’s not the only thing you’ll find here. If you’re interested in sports, the park has volleyball courts, a disc golf course, handball courts, four ball fields, and four football/soccer fields. You’ll also find a variety of walking paths winding around the park. You can stop by one of the picnic pavilions to enjoy a meal outside. If you like fishing, the Pennsylvania Fish Commission stocks Jordan Creek every spring.
Wildlands Conservancy South Mountain Preserve
If you enjoy hiking, one of the best spots to visit around Allentown is Wildlands Conservancy South Mountain Preserve. Here you’ll find trails of various lengths set amid old quarries, ancient boulders, and hardwood forests. For a little bit of a challenge, head out on the 1.7-mile Alpine Street Trail, which crosses several small streams and offers a rugged climb in certain places. Another popular option is the Trout Run Trail, which offers an incredible overlook of Emmaus and Allentown.
Cedar Beach Park
Cedar Beach Park is a great park for exercise enthusiasts, families, and anyone else who simply enjoys nature. The park features two hard and two beach volleyball courts, four lighted basketball courts, and a 1,900-square-foot Destination Playground. In the summer, the popular Cedar Pool is the perfect place to go when you need to cool down.
