Water Pumps Explained

The car’s water pump is driven by a belt connected to the engine. It is responsible for circulating water when the engine is running, cooling it down. The water pumped by this part is pushed through the engine, then the cylinders, and the radiator. The main function of the pump is to cool down the engine when it is running and to reduce the risk of overheating. By pushing the coolant through the engine, the pump allows the absorption of the heat. 

The water pump is generally made of iron or aluminum and is prone to corrosion. The water pump is located in the engine compartment of the car. It is easy to tell whether or not it is working, as it turns when the engine is running. The water pump keeps your engine cool on hot summer days and helps it maintain a constant operating temperature. If the pump is not functioning well and is not serviced immediately, this can lead to the failure of the engine.

Common Water Pump Problems

Having a properly functioning water cooling system is just as important for your engine’s performance as topping up your engine oil. When engines overheat, they can be damaged beyond repair. There are several signs of a failed water pump that can be noticed during regular inspections, such as worn seals, broken or tense belts driving the water pump, the buildup of the old coolant, leaks, and head gasket problems.

When your water pump is not functioning well, you might get a warning sign on the dashboard telling you that the engine is overheating. You will need to look out for a coolant leak, engine overheating, and noise from the engine. You might even find that the car does not start, due to the lack of the engine’s ability to lower its temperature. In some cases, the bearings of the water pump are worn, and these are not expensive to replace. It’s certainly cheaper than getting a new engine.

How to Inspect Your Car’s Water Pump

First, you should check the dashboard to see if the temperature gauge is in the normal range when the engine is running. Next, you must listen to determine if noises are coming from the engine. The main points of inspection are the water pump pulley belt attached to the engine, the gasket, where leaks would show up in a gummy residue, and the coolant reservoir. If you find no visible damage or leak, you should consult with a professional car mechanic who will test the car further before your engine suffers any damage.
